Sheryl Sandberg Addresses the Harvard Business School Class of 2012:

Get on a rocket ship. When companies are growing quickly and they are having a lot of impact, careers take care of themselves. And when companies aren’t growing quickly or their missions don’t matter as much, that’s when stagnation and politics come in. If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on.

The Facebook Float

Tonight at approximately 11pm WST Facebook is set to start trading (an hour and a half or so after the NASDAQ opens). Mark Zuckerberg is set to ring the opening bell, though personally I’d prefer Jesse Eisenberg to be running things.

Bloomberg has some good overall coverage. NYT Dealbook has a bunch of infographics, on expectations for Friday’s closing price, tech IPO dates and company values, along with IPO raising sizes and timelinesPerth Now also has a terrific article on the value of Facebook to Australian investors.

For those interested in the very specific details, annotated versions of the SEC filings for the IPO are available.

During the roadshow there was plenty to talk about. A Facebook-produced video did the rounds, receiving rave reviews. Virginia Heffernan even thought it was better than Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network”, at least in giving an insight into the Zuckerberg way.

NYMag look at Zuckerberg as CEO, his management style and growth throughout the years. For the story of how Facebook’s Bankers got their gig, have a read hereSiliconRepublic has had a look at Facebook as represented in popular culture. For details of the delicate art of IPO pricing, have a read here.

If you’ve bought into the Facebook IPO, let us know!

Art as a commodity

Has contemporary art lost it’s way? As the high flying world of billionaire art collectors amass their private ‘for their eyes only’ collections, the art market is starting to mirror the financial market more and more. Many artists are creating works solely to lure these private investors and start bidding wars among private equity firms and hedge funds such as The Art Trading Fund, The China Fund, The Competitor Fine Art Fund among others.

The sale of Andy Warhol’s “Double Elvis (Ferus Type) for $37 million to Jose Mugrabi (owner of the world’s largest Andy Warhol collection), and the production of goods by Takashi Murakami for the design house Louis Vuitton are prime examples of the commodification of art.

The question then arises whether by being commoditised and used as financial instrument used to maximise profits, does art loose it’s critical edge? In an article for Bloomberg View, Mark C. Taylor argues that it does.
